About us

The Bible is our final source for knowing the mind of God.

Who we are, what we teach, and what we spend ourselves on.

Who we are

Independent and undenominational.

The University church is made up of people simply trying to follow Jesus and His Spirit-revealed teachings. We are an independent and undenominational church that follows the New Testament as our only standard of faith and practice.

There is no headquarters above us and no board that directs us. Each congregation of the Lord's people governs itself under Christ, and this one has done so on the north side of Tampa for more than fifty years.

What we teach

A firm commitment to the God of the Bible.

The Bible is our final source for knowing the mind of God. We take it as sufficient — able to make a Christian complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work — and so we are content to teach what it teaches and to stop where it stops.

That is what we mean when we say simple New Testament Christianity. It isn't a slogan about being plain; it's a commitment about authority.

Benevolence

Help that comes from people, not programs.

Members here work directly with people in need — recovery from sex trafficking, domestic violence, poverty, homelessness, and support for mothers in hard circumstances. Some families have adopted.

We do this as Christians rather than through institutions the church funds. The distinction matters to us, and in practice it means the person helping you is a member you can call.

Missions

Supporting preachers, at home and abroad.

A large share of this congregation's resources goes to supporting men who preach the gospel. That work has reached Ethiopia and the Seychelles Islands, alongside preachers closer to home.

Questions people usually ask

That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:17
Questions?

Ask us anything.

We would rather answer a hard question than dodge it.
