About this sermon

The last class in the run through Luke, and it opens by setting the harmonizing problem aside: the four resurrection accounts differ, but difficulties are not contradictions, and this hour stays inside Luke's own narrative. The teacher stresses how little anyone expected: the women disbelieved, Peter going home puzzled rather than back to the others, Cleopas walking seven miles to Emmaus and seven more back in the dark. Jesus asking for a piece of fish is read as proof of a flesh-and-blood body, and Luke's habit of naming his eyewitnesses is the thread running through it all.
