Becoming Like the Rabbi - Discipleship

Matthew 14:22-33Matthew 4

About this sermon

Why did Peter ask to walk on the water instead of asking Jesus to calm the storm? JP Flores answers from first-century Jewish schooling, where only the best students were taken on by a rabbi and a disciple's whole ambition was to imitate his teacher down to his habits. Reading Matthew 14:22-33, he argues that Jesus sent the disciples into the storm deliberately, that Peter walked before he sank, and that sinking is not the same thing as being abandoned.
